Problems Uploading Image with FireFTP

I was having problems uploading pictures to a new website using FireFTP for Firefox and couldn’t figure out why. I was working on a newly created WHM account where I had been experimenting with cPanels hotlink protection & I thought that was the problem. It didn’t make sense though because some images worked but others didn’t. I was also working with a new installation of Wordpress 3.0 with pretty permalinks enalbed and enabling/disabling hotlink protection made the pretty permalinks stop working.

Here’s what was happening and how to fix it

When images were uploaded, they showed up in the remote directory. The images weren’t showing up on webpages nor would they appear when going to the image URL directly. Instead of the picture appearing, the image URL would appear instead.

The problem was with the FireFTP upload options. I don’t remember if I changed the settings or if they’re the default FireFTP settings, but the FireFTP setting “When transferring files use:” was set to ASCII Mode. Changing it to Automatic Mode made images start uploading properly.

The Fix:

Open Firefox
Open FireFTP
In FireFTP click Tools – Opetions (top right corner)
In the Options window, click the Downloads/Uploads tab
Select Automatic Mode in the “When transferring files use” box
Save & close

How Many People Watch Phineas & Ferb

I just had a proud daddy moment. My 8 yr old son called me into the living room where he was sitting in front of the computer with Google up & he asked me “Dad, how do you spell Phineas & Ferb?” I’ve never even heard of the show and I had no idea how to spell it so I asked him what it was and what he was trying to accomplish.

Eli let me know that he’s watched Phinneas & Ferb “like a hundred times” & he was curious how many other people watched it. Pretty cool right? Here he is, 8 yrs old, he has a question that he wants an answer to so he hops on Google to find the answer.

We proceeded to Google where I started slowly typing f-i-n-e-u-s then a list or suggestions popped up with several misspellings. The first result was for Phineas & Ferb on Disney so he knew that was the right one. He then popped back over to the other tab and finished typing his question in Google.

Not wanting him to lose confidence in his ability to find answers using Google, I cautioned that he may not find the exact answer, because that’s probably not a really common question & left him to figure it out on his own. “Dad, 835 people have voted on it. That must mean a lot of people watch it”. I agreed and congratulated him for finding an answer.

If you’re curious, millions of people watch the show. Here’s some info about Phineas & Ferb viewership. I don’t know much about it, but it’s a Disney show so I’m hoping it’s good.

We definitely live in a new era with 8 yr old kids turning to Google for answers & I kind of have mixed emotions about it. What other types of questions is he going to turn to Google for when he wants answers… There’s no putting the genie back in the bottle so I guess I’ll just monitor his activity & teach him to police himself. It’s like my Staff Sgt Thomas often said while I was in Marine Combat Training: “Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do”.

My fingers are crossed.

I read recently that Bing’s market share for searches was an impressive number since it was over 10%. Not sure if that was before or after these figures, but here’s what eWeek had to say.

Bing’s U.S. market share dipped slightly between March and April, according to new numbers by Experian Hitwise. Meanwhile, Google saw slight gains during the month, and Yahoo declined. However, Bing continued to demonstrate strong year-over-year gains in vertical categories such as health, travel, automotive and shopping, suggesting that Microsoft’s focus on that area is paying off. Google continues to hold the highest percentage of overall search.

Google climbed from 69.97% to 71.40% during that same period. Yahoo dropped from 15.04% to 14.96% and Ask dropped from 3.44% to 2.18%.

That’s why you hear me talking about Google search results so much. Combine everyone else’s search volume – then double it – and Google is still in the lead by 10%.

To answer the question directly – YES, real estate agents should have real estate websites and real estate blogs, but they don’t have to be separate from each other.

Of course every real estate agent should have a website, but surprisingly few have blogs. Real estate blogs will inevitably be deemed as crucial as a regular website. In fact, the ideal real estate website for today’s market is a blog. The problem with using most blogs as a primary real estate website though is that they don’t fit the mold of what most real estate agents are looking for in a website. Our websites fit the mold perfectly as they leverage the Web 2.0 benefits of blogs while maintaining a real estate website look and feel.
